‘Charm of Goldfinches’

£2,995.00

Goldfinches are a common sight in UK gardens and I see them most days on my morning dog walks here in Devon. As highly sociable birds they seem to always be in a ‘charm’ which is the collective noun for goldfinches. The name is derived from the old English ‘c’rim’ which describes the birds twittering ‘charming’ song.

My charm of goldfinches have been painted and gilded in 24 kt gold leaf, amongst their favourite plant from which they eat their favourite food, thistle seeds. In fact the scientific name for the goldfinch ‘Carduelis, carduelis’ is derived from the latin for thistle and one of the old English rural names for a goldfinch is ‘Thistle finch’.

I’ve used a slightly modified gilding technique to create a two tone gold silhouette of long wild, summer grasses inspired by Rosemoor garden, if you look closely, intricate speckles create an ambience of dancing motes, glimmering in the light.

Each of Danni’s pieces are original, unique and produced by Danni from start finish here in her studio. Each piece is inked, painted and gilded onto the reverse of toughened glass. After completion the piece is flipped over to reveal the artwork through the glass and framed in a 45mm deep frame, creating a gap between the artwork on the glass and the white backboard, which creates the shadow effect you can see behind the birds giving the whole piece an almost 3D quality. These shadows can move and dance across the backboard when the piece is hung in natural light, like in a lovely bright room , but will look equally as good under spots or in any well lit space. Once evening comes the the work will take on a whole new aspect as the 24kt goldleaf radiates its own luminescence. .
