There is something mesmerising about watching a shoal of fish move through the water. A group of individual bodies turn and change direction almost as one, creating a constantly shifting pattern of movement, light and colour.

I have always been fascinated by the fluidity of fish and the way their movements interact. For this piece, I wanted to capture that sense of energy — a shoal of mackerel weaving through the water, overlapping and moving together.

Mackerel are beautifully streamlined fish, built for speed and movement. Their distinctive blue-green backs, silvery sides and dark markings create a striking contrast, particularly when light catches their bodies beneath the surface.

I have carefully reverse-painted each fish individually onto glass, building up the characteristic markings, fins and subtle variations in colour. The fish are arranged closely together, creating layers of depth within the composition and giving the impression of a shoal moving through the water.

Although the fish form part of a larger gathering, each one has its own shape, position and character. Together they create a sense of rhythm and movement, with the eye travelling across the composition as though following the shoal itself.

As with all my work, this piece is created entirely by hand in my studio using the heritage craft of Verre-églomisé — painting onto the reverse of glass. Working in reverse means that every detail and layer must be carefully considered, with the finished image revealed when the glass is turned over.

Each piece I create is original and unique, made entirely by hand in my studio. No two artworks are ever the same.
