Squadron of Manta Rays

Squadron of Manta Rays
There are few sights in the underwater world quite as mesmerising as a manta ray in motion. With their enormous wing-like fins, they glide effortlessly through the water, moving with a grace and fluidity that almost makes them appear to fly.
For this piece, I wanted to capture that sense of freedom and movement through a gathering of manta rays, each one following its own path while becoming part of a much larger composition.
Manta rays are remarkable creatures. Their broad, triangular pectoral fins propel them through the water in sweeping movements, while the distinctive fins on either side of their mouths help guide plankton-rich water as they feed. Despite their impressive size, they move with extraordinary elegance.
I have chosen to work with a rich palette of deep and vibrant blues, building texture and subtle variations across the bodies of the rays. Flecks and fine markings create a sense of depth, almost suggesting the shifting patterns of light beneath the ocean's surface.
Each ray has been individually painted, with its own shape, position and movement. Their overlapping forms create a sense of rhythm throughout the composition, drawing the eye between the sweeping curves of their wings and the spaces that open between them.
I love the idea of these magnificent creatures travelling together. There is a feeling of connection within the group, but also a sense of individuality, as each ray moves through the water in its own way. Their sculptural forms and delicate shadows create a sense of depth, giving the impression that they are suspended in water, gliding just beyond our reach.
As with all my work, this piece is created entirely by hand in my studio using the heritage craft of Verre-églomisé — painting onto the reverse of glass. Working in reverse requires every layer to be carefully considered, with the finished image revealed when the glass is turned over.
The result is an artwork that celebrates the extraordinary beauty of the natural world, while exploring movement, connection and the freedom of the ocean.
Each piece I create is original and unique, made entirely by hand in my studio. No two artworks are ever the same.
