‘Living Strata’
With ‘Living Strata’, I wanted to capture something that often goes unnoticed — the quiet beauty of nature’s layers, where light filters through moss, stone and the living textures beneath our feet.
Nature doesn't rush to reveal itself. There is something beautiful about looking closely at the ground beneath us and discovering a whole world of colour, texture and tiny details.
The layers within rocks, the delicate lines of quartz, the moss growing across stone — each carries the marks of time and tells its own story.
For me, these layers also became a reflection on balance, harmony, hope and healing, and on the quiet persistence of nature.
‘Living Strata’ is created on a circular ‘Moon’ panel of glass, reverse-painted in a palette of rich green hues with subtle touches of pearl mica. The piece is then gilded with 24ct gold leaf, creating fine areas of warmth and luminosity within the deeper greens.
As with all of my Verre-églomisé work, the painting and gilding are created on the reverse of the glass. This allows the different layers of colour, mica and precious metal to sit beneath the surface, creating a depth and luminosity that changes as the light moves across the artwork.
I love the contrast between the organic greens and the warmth of the gold. The green feels grounded and alive, while the gold brings a sense of light — almost as though sunlight is filtering through the moss itself.
The artwork is presented in an invisible floating frame, allowing the circular glass panel to appear almost weightless within its space.
Each piece I create is original and unique, made entirely by hand in my studio, from the first marks on the glass through to the painting, gilding and framing.
