Deep Square Shoal of Sardines
Deep Square Shoal of Sardines
“Inspired by the beautiful dancing shoals of sardines that play around our shores here in the South West of England, this layered Deep Shoal of Sardines is painted in vibrant hues of blue, purple and green, then gilded in shimmering silver leaf.”
I love watching shoals of fish move together — constantly changing shape as they turn and catch the light. There is something wonderfully hypnotic about the movement of a shoal, and I wanted to capture some of that feeling in this piece.
The sardines are individually inked and painted onto two panels of toughened glass using my traditional Verre-églomisé process. The layers are then gilded in shimmering silver leaf before being carefully framed together.
The two layers of glass are separated by 20mm slips within a bespoke box frame. This creates depth between the layers and allows the shoal to cast delicate shadows onto the white backboard behind it, giving the artwork an almost three-dimensional quality.
In natural light, these shadows move and dance across the backboard as the light changes throughout the day. The piece looks equally beautiful under spotlights or in a well-lit room, where the metallic leaf catches and reflects the light.
As evening falls, the artwork takes on another quality altogether, as the silver leaf begins to radiate its own subtle luminosity.
Each piece I create is original and unique, and this artwork has been created entirely by hand in my studio, from the first marks on the glass through to the gilding and framing.
