‘Initial Singularity’

‘Initial Singularity’
The initial singularity refers to a theoretical state at the very beginning of the universe — a moment when all matter, energy and spacetime were compressed into an infinitesimally small point.
It is often associated with the Big Bang: the theoretical starting point from which our expanding universe emerged.
This idea of everything existing within one impossibly small point fascinated me, and became the starting point for this piece.
My ‘Initial Singularity’ is a circular abstract work, 850mm in diameter, created on 6mm toughened, polished-edge glass.
I wanted to capture a sense of immense energy and movement contained within something that, at first glance, feels almost still. The artwork is reverse-painted in a rich palette of reds and umbers, with subtle hints of gold and copper mica adding depth, luminosity and movement beneath the surface.
The piece is then gilded in copper leaf, using the reflective qualities of the metal to create areas of warmth and light that shift as you move around the artwork.
As with all of my Verre-églomisé work, the painting and gilding are created on the reverse of the glass. This means that what you see is built in layers, with each mark and material sitting behind the surface rather than on top of it.
I love the contrast between the scientific idea behind this piece and the very tactile, physical process of creating it. Something as vast and incomprehensible as the beginning of the universe is translated into paint, mica and metal leaf, captured within a single circle of glass.
