“Migration of Monarch Butterflies”
A kaleidoscope of individuality
There is something wonderfully captivating about a gathering of butterflies — hundreds of individual creatures moving together, creating a constantly changing pattern of colour, movement and light.
The monarch butterfly has long been one of my favourite subjects to work with, and this piece began with that fascination. The migratory monarch is an iconic species, but its story is also one of vulnerability. Habitat loss, climate change and the use of pesticides have contributed to dramatic declines in migratory monarch populations, making their future increasingly uncertain.
Within this larger gathering, I wanted to celebrate something slightly more personal: individuality.
Among the many monarchs are a pair of Blue Monarchs. They stand out from the familiar orange and black pattern of the others, but they are still very much part of the same kaleidoscope.
For me, they became a little reminder that we can belong to something without losing what makes us individual. We can move together, share a space and be connected, while still remaining completely ourselves.
I spend weeks carefully inking each butterfly individually onto the reverse of the glass. Every butterfly is slightly different, with its own markings, position and movement, so although the overall composition feels like one enormous gathering, each tiny creature remains its own original element.
As with all of my work, the artwork is created entirely by hand in my studio using the traditional heritage craft of Verre-églomisé — reverse-painting and gilding onto glass.
The finished artwork is created across two panels of toughened glass and mounted within a deep handmade frame. The space between the artwork and the white backing allows the butterflies to cast delicate shadows behind them, giving the piece an almost three-dimensional quality.
As natural light moves across the glass, those shadows shift and dance across the backboard. As the light changes throughout the day, so does the character of the artwork. And in the evening, the metallic gilding catches and reflects the available light, giving the butterflies their own subtle glow.
