Barn owls, are considered a symbol of mystery and grace, one of nature’s most captivating creatures. Known for their distinctive heart-shaped face and silent flight, this nocturnal bird of prey glides effortlessly through the night in search of small mammals. In my gilded glass art, the barn owl’s ethereal beauty and haunting presence are captured using the ancient technique of verre églomisé, layering paint and delicate copper and 24 kt gold leaf to highlight the intricate patterns of its feathers and the gentle intensity of its gaze.

This piece celebrates the barn owl not just as a creature of the wild, but as a timeless emblem of wisdom and quiet strength. The interplay of light on gilded surfaces in the artwork adds a luminous depth, emphasizing the owl’s ghostly, almost otherworldly nature. It is a perfect subject for anyone drawn to the subtle elegance of British wildlife and the serene power of the natural world.

Once a very common sight at dusk or dawn in the English countryside the much-loved and beautiful, Barn Owl has suffered large declines through the 20th century. Historically the bird of prey’s population is thought to have been adversely affected by organochlorine pesticides.

Each of Danni’s pieces are original, unique and produced by Danni from start finish here in her studio. Each piece is inked, painted and gilded onto the reverse of toughened glass. After completion the piece is flipped over to reveal the artwork through the glass and framed in a 45mm deep frame, creating a gap between the artwork on the glass and the white backboard, which creates the shadow effect you can see behind the Owl giving the whole piece an almost 3D quality. These shadows can move and dance across the backboard when the piece is hung in natural light, like in a lovely bright room , but will look equally as good under spots or in any well lit space. Once evening comes the the work will take on a whole new aspect as the copper and 24kt goldleaf radiate their own luminescence. .
