Devon Open Studios 2026

I’m very excited to be opening the doors to my studio in Appledore this September as part of Devon Open Studios.

From 12th–20th September, 11am–4pm, my studio will be open to visitors, giving you the opportunity to come and see where my Verre-églomisé artworks are created, meet me, and take a closer look at the process behind the finished pieces.

Come and see the work up close

If you’ve only seen my work online or through photographs, visiting the studio is a completely different experience.

Verre-églomisé is a very tactile and light-sensitive art form. I work on the reverse of the glass, building each artwork layer by layer with paint, ink and precious metal leaf. From the front, all of those layers come together to create the finished image, with gold and other metals catching and reflecting the light as you move around the piece.

There are details that simply don't photograph in quite the same way.

The tiny brushstrokes.

The texture of the gilding.

The way the gold suddenly catches the light.

And the depth created by working in reverse.

It’s one of the reasons I love having people visit the studio — you can really take your time and look closer.

A rare heritage craft

My work combines contemporary wildlife art with the rare heritage craft of Verre-églomisé, an ancient technique of painting and gilding onto the reverse of glass.

I'm fascinated by the natural world and particularly drawn to the creatures and details that can so easily be overlooked — moths, butterflies, birds, fish, plants and the small moments of beauty that surround us.

Using such an old technique to explore contemporary wildlife feels like an exciting combination.

The craft may be centuries old, but there are still new stories to tell with it.

I'll also have a selection of original artworks on display, and if you've ever wondered what it's like to commission a piece of Verre-églomisé, I'm very happy to talk through ideas and possibilities.

There is no need to know anything about the technique before you visit. I'm always happy to explain how the artworks are made and why working on the reverse of the glass makes the process so unusual.
