‘Eclipse of Tiger Moths by Moonlight'

£1,595.00

Tiger moths are among the most striking of our moths, with their bold markings and beautiful flashes of colour. Unlike many moth species that rely on camouflage, some tiger moths use vivid patterns as a warning to predators.

I love the contrast between their delicate wings and these surprisingly bold markings. There is something almost magical about seeing moths appear at dusk, moving quietly through the darkness and towards the light.

That feeling of night, movement and light was the inspiration for ‘Eclipse of Tiger Moths by Moonlight’.

For this piece, I wanted to create a sense of moths emerging from the darkness, with their delicate forms appearing almost illuminated against the deep background.

Each moth is individually inked, painted and gilded onto the reverse of toughened glass using my traditional Verre-églomisé process. The metallic leaf catches the light as you move around the artwork, creating tiny flashes of luminosity amongst the painted forms.

The artwork is then framed in a 35mm-deep bespoke wooden frame, creating a space between the glass and the white backboard. This allows the moths to cast delicate shadows behind them, giving the piece an almost three-dimensional quality.

In natural light, these shadows move and dance across the backboard as the light changes throughout the day. Under spotlights or in a well-lit room, the metallic leaf catches the light beautifully.

As evening falls, the piece takes on a completely different quality. The metallic leaf begins to radiate its own subtle luminosity, making the moths appear to glow from within.

I love that contrast — the quiet darkness of the night and these tiny creatures catching the light.

Each piece I create is original and unique, made entirely by hand in my studio, from the first marks on the glass through to the painting, gilding and framing.
