‘Cosmos’

£1,395.00

In Indian philosophy, the cosmos can be understood as an interconnected whole — a meeting point between the scientific, religious and philosophical ways we try to understand our place within the universe.

This idea is beautifully expressed in the Sanskrit saying:

‘Yat pinḍe tad brahmāṇḍe’
“As in the cell, so in the universe.”

This idea of connection and interconnectedness was the starting point for my ‘Cosmos’.

The artwork is painted in deep blue and indigo hues, colours traditionally associated with contemplation, intuition and the inner self. Indigo is also associated with the sixth chakra, often referred to as the third eye.

I wanted to create something that feels both expansive and intimate — a small glimpse of something much larger than ourselves.

‘Cosmos’ is created as a floating panel, reverse-painted onto glass and gilded in shimmering silver leaf. Across the surface are delicate transparent white lines which respond beautifully to changing light. At certain angles they almost disappear, while at others they become more pronounced, creating a subtle sense of movement across the artwork.

The deep blues and indigo shift as the light changes, while the silver leaf catches and reflects the light, giving the piece a quiet luminosity.

As with all of my Verre-églomisé work, the painting and gilding are created on the reverse of the glass. This means the finished artwork has a wonderful depth and clarity, with the layers of paint and precious metal leaf revealed through the glass.

The piece is presented in an invisible floating frame, allowing the artwork to appear to sit almost weightlessly within its space.

Each piece I create is original and unique, made entirely by hand in my studio, from the first marks on the glass through to the painting, gilding and framing.
