‘Bumble of Bees’

‘Bumble of Bees’
There is something wonderfully joyful about bumble bees. They are large, beautifully hairy and surprisingly gentle, with their constant buzzing becoming such a familiar sound as spring and summer arrive.
For this piece, I wanted to capture that sense of movement and abundance — a whole bumble of bees busy going about their work.
Around 150 individual bumble bees make up the artwork, each one carefully inked, painted and gilded by hand onto the reverse of toughened glass.
I used 24ct gold leaf and silver leaf to pick out the bodies and wings of the bees, allowing the metallic surfaces to catch and reflect the light as you move around the artwork.
The tiny wings of a bumble bee beat incredibly quickly as they move from flower to flower. I wanted to capture some of that energy within the piece, while still retaining the gentle, almost meditative quality that I associate with watching bees working among wildflowers.
As with all of my Verre-églomisé work, the artwork is created on the reverse of the glass. Once the painting and gilding are complete, the panel is turned over to reveal the finished piece through the glass.
The single layer of gilded glass is framed in a 50mm-deep bespoke wooden frame, with slips separating the glass from the backboard. This creates depth between the artwork and the backboard, allowing the bees to cast delicate shadows and giving the piece an almost three-dimensional quality.
In natural light, these shadows move and dance across the backboard as the light changes throughout the day. The metallic leaf also catches the light differently as you move around the piece.
As evening falls, the gold and silver leaf take on another quality, beginning to radiate their own subtle luminosity.
Each piece I create is original and unique, made entirely by hand in my studio, from the first marks on the glass through to the painting, gilding and framing.
